SUISSE 1980 – a Day in the FieldTo view larger images with captions, click on the first photo (left photo) Klaus returned to Switzerland in 1980’s to visit family and meet up with the infamous and then considered very eccentric beekeeper, known to most as "The Hay Man." His house was all made of hay bails and his approach to beekeeping was not in keeping with the "norm". Many of his ideas combined with an understanding of the bees’ nature and the kinship necessary with the bees have been incorporated by Klaus into his approach to beekeeping. One learns through question and from a variety of sources utilizing different concepts/techniques and overall approach. Klaus’ meeting with the Hay Man left a lasting impression, one which is still told: gave new direction/approach to Klausesbees beekeeping, making it more flexible. It deepened Klaus’ respect of the relationship that ought to exist between bee and keeper. (who is to say which is which?). Here are some pictures of his hives, inside his working area and one of him through the mirror. He has long since died but he is remembered well by Klaus through the stories Klaus tells of his visit with the old fellow. Klaus was then himself in his early forties.
