We leave Carpenteria at 4am head south on #101 along the coast to #126, past Filmore, to join up at #5 which takes us over the Grape Vine into Shafter - trip time about 5hours. This time it rained heavily throughout the Grape Vine trek.  But the almond groves were dry and the air slightly chilled.
